The Lowa Renegade GTX mid-rise boot is perfect for day hikes and overnights where weight is a concern. Out of the box the boot needs little break in time before it’s ready to tackle the trails. The Vibram® sole provided a moderate amount of flex and good traction when ascending on a recent climb in the Pacific Northwest, and the seamless, breathable and waterproof Gore-Tex® lining was a great feature during water crossings and when caught in the rain.
The boot fit a bit wide for me, but the issue was resolved when thicker socks were used. Your body will definitely thank you for the boot’s light weight, but you’ll also feel more of the trail at times. If pursuing moderate to heavy-weight backpacking, a stiffer soled shoe may be desired; however, your trade-off will be the weight.
The derby-style lacing kept the boot snug and secure throughout the day. The Renegade GTX looks great on and off the trails, and you will find yourself wearing them more than just for hiking.
