Once at the top, there is a nice parking area with great views of the Sawatch Range, Buena Vista, and Salida as your reward for a long, bumpy ride. If you have the energy, the final 500’ hike to the summit of Antero is well worth your effort. Antero is the prominent peak to the north of the parking area, and the trail follows the ridge before climbing steeply around the south side of the mountain to the summit. Take care in the loose talus, especially while descending. Once on the summit, you’ll enjoy views of Mt. Princeton to the north and Mt. Shavano and Tabeguache to the south.
This is a great day trip the summit of a wonderful Colorado 14er. If you have an extra day during your Colorado vacation or plan your visit to Mt. Antero as a stand-alone excursion, you won’t be disappointed. Colorado’s Mt. Antero road is one of our favorites.
